The committee on Foreign Affairs is competent to questions related to the CFSP – common foreign and security policy – and to the ESDP – European security and defence policy. In this context, the commission is assisted by a subcommittee SEDE – security and defence.
AFET committee is the framework for the relations of the EP with other institutions and bodies of the European Union, with the United Nations and other international organisations and inter-parliamentary assemblies for matters falling under its competencies.
The committee deals with the reinforcement of political relations with third countries, particularly those situated in the vicinity of the Union, through major aid programmes or international agreements such as association and partnership agreements. AFET committee is responsible for the opening, monitoring and concluding of negotiations concerning new accessions of Member States to the Union.
Issues concerning human rights, protection of minorities, promotion of democratic values in third countries are also dealt within the Committee and therefore it is assisted by another subcommittee on human rights.
The committee coordinates the work of joint parliamentary committees and parliamentary cooperation committees as well as that of inter-parliamentary delegations and ad hoc delegations and election observation missions falling within its remit.
